Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to demonstrate his exceptional talent on the field, solidifying his status as one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers. The Detroit Lions’ superstar has already caught a league-leading six touchdowns through just four games this season. This achievement caps off a tremendous springboard success in his young career. With an impressive 87% completion rate on passes thrown his way by quarterback Jared Goff and averaging 9.9 yards per attempt, St. Brown’s performance has been a key factor in the Lions’ offensive success.
St. Brown pulled off an incredible trifecta. It was his sixth receiving touchdown of the season already, making him the first player since Calvin Ridley in 2018 to accomplish that feat through his team’s first four games of the season. His streak of touchdowns is especially noteworthy, as he’s found the endzone in every one of his last three contests. This season, he trails only Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson’s eight touchdowns in 2011 for the second most in franchise history during the first four games.
Forward to the most recent game played against the Baltimore Ravens and how impressive St. Brown looked. He drew seven targets, notched 70 receiving yards, and caught two touchdown passes. One of his key plays occurred when he caught a short pass from Goff with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter, extending Detroit’s lead to 17-7. St. Brown had a big 20-yard catch right around the two-minute warning, icing a victory in primetime as time drained away.
Goff praised St. Brown’s capabilities, saying, “He’s playing well. Would’ve loved to get him more involved a little bit today, but [that’s] just the way the game worked.” He praised St. Brown’s dangerous repertoire of skills, calling him “as good as they get in our game.” He continued, “That’s what we call the dagger, the kill shot. I’ve said that a million times, and I’m just lucky to play with him.”
St. Brown is more of the former despite demonstrating full-on Ironman resilience this season, entering 2025 in primetime form after offseason knee procedure. And offensive coordinator John Morton has purposely dialed up plays that put him in position to thrive. Thus, he has seamlessly returned to the rotation.
“I feel like as a quarterback, he’s so in tune to so many other things than I am as a receiver,” St. Brown explained. “So for me, it’s like I can ask him anything honestly from his point of view.” This mutual understanding between Goff and St. Brown has been pivotal in their growing on-field chemistry, enabling them to master both simple and complex route-running.
Simply put, the Lions are a scoring machine, having scored an astounding 137 points in their first four games alone. Here’s just one way that shows their incredible offensive explosion. As they prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals next week, they will look to build on St. Brown’s outstanding performance and maintain their momentum.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the special connection between Goff and St. Brown, stating, “That will always be a security blanket, man. Those two guys, what they’ve got, the rapport they have, the connection they have, it’s special.” In addition to this connection being apparent in their fluid on-field dialogue between plays, this bond is likely the biggest reason for the Lions’ success on offense.
As the college football season heats up, Amon-Ra St. Brown is going to catch eyeballs. He may even garner a few headlines of his own with some standout performances. As for the Detroit Lions, they’re ready to use his skills even more as they look to make a playoff push in the coming weeks.
