Amon-Ra St. Brown, the Detroit Lions wide receiver, recently issued an apology regarding a celebratory incident that occurred during an NFL game against the Washington Commanders. Even former President Donald Trump got in on the fun by posting St. Brown’s video on X and dubbing him “Amon-Ra St. Trump” in the post. This shooting immediately garnered national headlines and outrage.
The match was played at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Their first victory of the season came when they rolled over the Commanders, winning in a blowout 44-22 performance. Trump became the first sitting president to attend a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter in 1978. This milestone raised the stakes and excitement of the race.
In a wide-ranging conversation on his podcast, “St. Brown Podcast,” Amon-Ra St. Brown did respond to the incident and explain what he meant to do. In his statement, he insisted that his celebration was intended strictly for fun and not as an opposition to the political leaders.
“First of all, if I offended anyone, I do apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone. It was just, we’re having fun,” – Amon-Ra St. Brown
St. Brown further elaborated on his feelings about the situation, stating, “If any president was at that game and had a dance I would have done it. It had nothing to do with who the president was.” His comments would seem to suggest that he didn’t want to make any political statement at all with his celebration.
The former president’s reposting of the video created parodies from fans and pundits as well, both catching wind of the TikTok inspo. Some expressed admiration for St. Brown’s levity, almost all denounced any Trump-connectedness. More telling is the attention surrounding the incident, particularly as it demonstrates the inextricable link between sports and politics in modern America.
Despite the controversy, St. Brown remains focused on his performance on the field and his role in the Lions’ success this season. As a key player for the team, he continues to demonstrate his commitment both to his teammates and to engaging with fans in a positive manner.
