Amateur Player Triumphs at One Point Slam Before Australian Open

Amateur tennis player Jordan Smith from Sydney became an international star this week. He won the first edition of the “One Point Slam,” a new experimental exhibition event in the leadup to the Australian Open. The tournament took place at the iconic Rod Laver Arena and featured a mix of elite professionals and amateur players. Smith scored a dazzling upset victory and pocketed a winner’s check of 1 million Australian dollars, or about $661,000. He means to use the newfound millions to purchase a home.

The Australian Open sure does know how to ring in the new year! It takes place at Melbourne Park from January 18 through February 1. The “One Point Slam” served as an exciting precursor to the tournament, allowing amateur players to showcase their skills against an elite field of 24 professionals. It meant amateurs such as Smith gained an unfair boon with two serves, compared to ATP or WTA-ranked players who were allowed only one. This unexpected twist introduced a thrilling layer of drama to the competitions.

Smith confronted Joanna Garland in a nail-biting final, but held on for a narrow, doggedly-won victory. Commenting on his experience, Smith admitted to being nervous at first, but ultimately relished the opportunity to compete with this level of talent.

“I don’t know anymore. Coming into tonight, I was just happy to win one point. I was so nervous, but I enjoyed being out here. It was a great experience,” – Jordan Smith

The exhibition event attracted notable players, including Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Iga Świątek, who participated alongside Smith and other amateur competitors. Alcaraz, the defending champion, admitted he shocked himself during the tournament.

“The dropshot is my shot, I don’t know what happened,” – Carlos Alcaraz

Pedro Martínez shocked the world with his completely unanticipated underhand serve which totally baffled Alexander Bublik. The audience cheered in astonishment at the shocking twist!

“I gave him a taste of his own medicine,” – Pedro Martínez

The “One Point Slam” successfully blended entertainment with competition, allowing fans to witness thrilling matchups between seasoned professionals and eager amateurs. As the Australian Open approaches, Smith’s victory not only highlights his potential but sets a captivating tone for the upcoming tournament.
