Amanda Anisimova put her artistry on display by capturing the China Open women’s singles title on Sunday. She defeated fellow teen Linda Nosková in the final, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. This victory is a huge step for Anisimova as it is her first grand slam title. She joins the likes of tennis legends Serena Williams and Coco Gauff as the third American to capture this illustrious crown.
Beijing wasn’t the first time Anisimova has shown formidable bounce back ability. An impressive start to the match was halted by a second-set downturn in fortunes, with Tan racking up 17 unforced errors against Nosková. After losing focus early in the third set, she was able to reclaim her poise by closing out the match on one of her trademark backhand return winners.
Anisimova’s route to the title included a dramatic semifinal clash with fellow American phenom Coco Gauff, which she won in straight sets. So far, this has been a breakthrough year for Anisimova. She’s now the first American woman to win more than one WTA 1000 title in a season since Serena Williams in 2015. That streak included a dominating performance at the China Open. This comes on the heels of her back-to-back strong runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open this summer.
Anisimova would fight through some adversity, ankle trouble having caused her to withdraw from this month’s Korean Open. More than anything, her grit and resolve was on full display. Having fought challenges in her downright juicy semifinals, she was prepared to expose Karolina Muchová and Jasmine Paolini.
Anisimova’s potent serving and savvy court sense was on display in the title match. Nosková noted the effectiveness of Anisimova’s approach:
“I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself. I can take a lot of positives and (have made) a lot of progress… just figuring out ways to face certain challenges and push myself in moments when it feels like I can’t go any further.” – Amanda Anisimova
Anisimova’s title at the China Open is further evidence of her extraordinary ability. This victory goes a long way towards solidifying her place as one of the greatest players ever to play women’s tennis. She is now ranked world No. 4. This year has been mind-blowing for her on her journey up the ranks and competing at all these top levels.
“I think it’s just the fact that she comes after every point that she possibly can.” – Linda Noskova
The championship match showcased Anisimova’s powerful serve and strategic play. Nosková noted the effectiveness of Anisimova’s approach:
“It’s definitely her powerful serve that she starts the rally with. Then she just continues to play as much down the line as possible.” – Linda Noskova
Anisimova’s victory at the China Open adds to her growing list of achievements, solidifying her position as one of the top players in women’s tennis. Currently ranked world No. 4, she continues to build on a remarkable year that has seen her rise through the ranks and compete at the highest levels.
