Alice Capsey, the impressive young England all-rounder has set herself big goals, as she wants to become the “best batter in the world”. This pledge represents an important turning point in her campaign. It comes on the heels of another disappointment: she was omitted from the T20 squad for next month’s tour to South Africa. This decision follows the dismal group-stage exit for England at the most recent T20 World Cup, which was hosted by Australia in October.
Since her debut in July 2022, Capsey has become a mainstay in the white-ball England teams. She remains the proud owner of a national record top score of 67 not out for her country. In her young but busy career she’s already played 26 ODIs and 45 T20s. She’s scored four half-centuries in T20 cricket over this span. She has struggled recently, scoring in single figures eight times from her last 13 T20 matches.
Despite the challenges, Capsey’s resilience shines through. However she was called back into the squad due to the injury to Paige Scholfield. She missed out on all three T20 fixtures upon her return. Capsey took the stage during the third T20 of the Women’s Ashes against Australia. This level of participation proves her dedication and devotion to the team.
In the summer, Capsey was up against strong competition from heavy hitters such as West Indies and India. She still wasn’t able to get past the 25 run mark in both series. Reflecting on her recent performances, she acknowledged, “Over the last year to now, I haven’t performed how I would have liked.”
Capsey’s ambitions for herself are just as evident, as she seeks to be better every day. She emphasized her determination to excel by stating, “I want to be the best batter in the world. Any player who’s playing international cricket will want to strive to be the best.”
Her desire to grow is seconded by her teammates and coaches. One team member noted, “No-one means to not do well. No-one means to lose a game. We all want to win games of cricket for England. For us, it’s about learning from every single game.”
England hoping to be ready for next such competition. The mood in the squad ahead of their next game at Edgbaston is one of buoyant positivity. Another voice from within the camp remarked, “Edgbaston is another game for us to come back and end this T20 series showing what a good team we can be and how much we have learned over the last six to 12 months.”
