Alejandro del Rey secured his inaugural European tour title at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, marking a significant milestone in his golfing career. The Spanish golfer emerged victorious by four strokes after carding a third consecutive 6-under 66, finishing the tournament at 22-under par. This achievement came during his 70th start on the tour, highlighting a journey of persistence and skill.
Del Rey entered the final round with a two-shot lead and quickly extended it to five with birdies on the first, second, and fifth holes. His bogey-free performance over the weekend at the Al Hamra Golf Club was instrumental in his win. As he parred his way home, he comfortably fended off Marcus Armitage, who finished second, three shots behind at 18-under.
Armitage had led after the first two rounds, but Del Rey's impressive form over the final two days proved decisive. Meanwhile, David Puig of Spain shared third place with Armitage at 15-under. Del Rey's last notable performance had been in March at the Singapore Classic, where he tied for seventh.
Despite starting the tournament ranked No. 308 globally, Del Rey's victory in Ras Al Khaimah will likely boost his standing significantly. At 26 years old, he has shown that perseverance and hard work can eventually translate into success.
"I'm just grateful and I'm very happy that this finally came," said Del Rey, expressing his elation following the win.
His journey has not been without its challenges. Reflecting on his past struggles, Del Rey acknowledged moments of doubt and frustration in his career.
"I got to a point last year where I just felt like I wasn't having that much fun on the golf course because for me, playing for 20th, 30th place wasn't that meaningful at that point," he admitted candidly.
This victory is not only a personal triumph for Del Rey but also a testament to his dedication to improving his game. It marks a new chapter in his career, one filled with promise and potential.
