Alejandro del Rey secured his first European tour title in a commanding fashion at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, marking a significant milestone in his golfing career. The 26-year-old golfer from Spain triumphed on Sunday, finishing the tournament with an impressive score of 22-under par, winning by four strokes. Del Rey's victory was highlighted by his consistent play, shooting a third consecutive 6-under 66 and remaining bogey-free over the weekend at the Al Hamra Golf Club.
Del Rey began the final round with a two-shot lead and quickly extended his advantage through a series of birdies, at one point stretching his lead to five shots. His remarkable performance saw him finish the week 18 under for the tournament, showcasing his skill and determination. He expressed his joy and gratitude at this achievement, reflecting on his journey in professional golf.
"I'm just grateful and I'm very happy that this finally came," he said, capturing the sentiment of a hard-earned victory.
This championship marked Del Rey's 70th start on the European tour. Prior to this win, his last top-10 finish was in March at the Singapore Classic, where he tied for seventh. Del Rey's performance not only broke his winless streak but also reaffirmed his potential as a formidable player on the tour.
The competition saw Marcus Armitage of England finish in second place, while fellow Spaniard David Puig secured third position with a score of 15 under. Del Rey's journey to this victory was not without its challenges; he had faced periods of doubt about his career path.
"I got to a point last year where I just felt like I wasn't having that much fun on the golf course because for me, playing for 20th, 30th place wasn't that meaningful at that point," Del Rey shared, highlighting his struggles and motivation to reach this new pinnacle.
