Alec Stewart has left an indelible mark on the sport of cricket. Especially considering how often he zoomed to success back in his golden years as Surrey’s director of cricket. During his leadership the club experienced phenomenal success, winning four County Championship titles. During his captaincy, Surrey won the County Championship for three years running, from 2022 to 2024.
When Alec Stewart announced in March 2024 his decision to resign, he shared that his decision was a personal one. He emphasized the importance of family, stating, “As people may know, my wife has been battling cancer since 2013 and I want to give her, and my family, more of my time over the coming years than this job allows.” This touching tribute sheds light on how Lynn Stewart’s inspiration helped encourage him to retire from the grueling post.
After those departures, director of cricket Alec Stewart has resigned. Yet he’ll remain connected with Surrey County Cricket Club through a new part-time role as high-performance cricket advisor. This new role provides him the flexibility to remain connected to and help grow the club he loves, while putting his family’s needs first.
Oli Slipper, chief executive of Surrey County Cricket Club, extended condolences to Alec and the Stewart family, stating, “The sincere condolences of everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club are with Alec and the whole Stewart family.” He further added, “Our very best wishes are with the family and we will continue to offer any support to them that we are able to.”
Lynn Stewart’s fight against cancer was one of the hardest moments of their lives, and for both Lynn and her husband. Alec’s decision to put family first during this difficult time is a testament to the love and devotion he has for his family.
