Alec Stewart Returns as Director of Cricket at Surrey

Alec Stewart, former England captain, and rejoin in full swing. He has returned to his job as director of cricket at Surrey, still very much a national force in English cricket. Stewart, 62, who first started in this role back in 2013. Since that season he has been an instrumental figure in the club’s success, skippering the side to four County Championship titles.

By the end of last year, Stewart had stepped away from his role. He did this largely to support his wife, Lynn, as she fought bravely against cancer. After a difficult time, he’s all set to resume full-time with the club he feels at home with.

In his own glittering playing career, Stewart had been an accomplished England wicketkeeper in 133 Test matches for his country between 1990 and 2003. He was instrumental in captaining the one-day side to within a ball of winning the World Cup in 1992. His experience and strong leadership have proved essential for Surrey. Under his stewardship, the club has won three County Championship titles in a row from 2022 to 2024.

Surrey chief executive Steve Elworthy was a big advocate for Stewart’s return, detailing Stewart’s dedication and work ethic within the club.

“Alec’s commitment, drive and attention to detail has built the team into the side it is today and we know he will continue to progress the team as he resumes his role at the helm on the men’s game in the county,” – Steve Elworthy

Elworthy further pointed out that during Stewart’s year-long absence, he has still been a central figure in the cricket management team. It’s largely down to his driving influence that even in his absence standards have remained sky-high across the club.

Stewart’s successful five-year spell as director of cricket had seen Surrey become the dominant force in county cricket. With a focus on nurturing talent through the club’s pathway system, Stewart aims to continue fostering players who aspire to represent their country.

“My priorities have always been to support the cricket management team and the squad to be the best county in the country, to bring cricketers into our professional squad through our pathway system and help players to fulfil their dreams of representing their country,” – Alec Stewart
