Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United’s new captain, is the latest target of transfer speculation. Al Hilal, one of Saudi Arabia’s largest clubs, is reportedly very interested in signing him. Fernandes is all-in on his position at United. He recently signed a new contract through 2027, with the possibility of one more year beyond that.
Fernandes arrived at Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for an initial £47 million deal that could rise to £68 million. Since then, though, he’s carved out a regular role on the squad that’s made him arguably their most important player. Though he has repeatedly professed his desire to remain at United, he has left the door open for the possibility that his future is not at United.

The interest from Al Hilal is indicative of a much larger strategy to make their squad one of Asia’s best. Despite Fernandes being named on a short list of potential targets, moves to sign him are not further along.
Sporting Lisbon’s manager, Ruben Amorim, was full of praise for Fernandes, saying he could be one of the best players in the world. He went on record as saying, “Bruno Fernandes is not for sale” and the importance of that player to the club he currently plays for just goes to show.
On the pitch, as Manchester United’s captain, Fernandes is equally important. His leadership and on-field performance have been central to the club’s long-standing ambitions. Since then, there has been endless speculation about his future. There is zero evidence to suggest that Al Hilal’s interest is impacting his deal with Manchester United.
Fernandes is set to represent Saudi Arabia in an expanded tournament in the United States next month alongside Al Hilal, further solidifying his connection with the region.
