The LPGA's Asian swing commenced with a striking performance by Akie Iwai at the Siam Country Club's Pattaya Old Course. Iwai, taking advantage of a sponsor's invite, shot an impressive 10-under 62, leading by three strokes after the opening round. The tournament marks the first stop of the LPGA's Asian tour, setting an exciting tone for the competitions ahead.
Iwai began her round with a series of four birdies, setting a brisk pace that she maintained throughout. By the turn, she had secured three additional birdies, showcasing her precision and skill. Her strong finish included birdies on three of her last four holes, allowing her to equal the 18-hole record previously set by Yuka Saso in 2022 and Jessica Korda in 2018.
"Today, my shots and my putting were good," said Akie Iwai.
Trailing Iwai by three strokes, Sweden's Maja Stark posted a commendable 65. Stark's round was highlighted by an eagle on the fifth hole, accompanied by six birdies and only one bogey. Local favorite Moriya Jutanugarn delivered a solid performance, finishing third with a 66 after carding six birdies and a single bogey.
Jeeno Thitikul, ranked world No. 27, celebrated her 22nd birthday with a round of 68. Meanwhile, defending champion Patty Tavatanakit of Thailand ended her day with a 71. Iwai's current lead reflects her growing prowess on the tour, having earned her LPGA Tour membership by tying for fifth place at last year's LPGA Final Qualifier.
Iwai's familiarity with the Pattaya Old Course, having played it twice in previous tournaments, undoubtedly contributed to her remarkable play. Her exceptional performance has set a high bar for the upcoming rounds, generating anticipation and excitement among fans and competitors alike.
