Akie Iwai created history in winning The Standard Portland Classic, her first victory on the LPGA Tour. The new golfer on the block demonstrated her formidable talent at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. She closed out the tournament with a dazzling day 6-under 66, earning her a massive four-stroke victory. This victory is a huge accomplishment for her career. It puts her in parallel with her twin sister, Chisato Iwai, as a rookie LPGA Tour winner.
What was just as spectacular was Iwai’s play throughout the tournament, including a bogey-free score to wrap up her final round. Her poise was impressive, making birdies on the last two holes, including one from 18 feet on the last hole. Her sister, Chisato, celebrated the victory by dousing her in champagne. This moment underscored the unbreakable family bond that has defined much of Iwai’s journey.
Aside from the majors, the Standard Portland Classic is the longest-running event on the LPGA Tour. It’s been a crowning jewel ever since it began long ago in 1972. The tournament has seen many talented golfers over the years, but Iwai’s performance this year has set her apart from the rest.
Prior to her victory in Portland, Iwai had already made a name for herself with strong performances earlier in the season. Second place in Thailand in February and again in Los Angeles in April. All of these experiences played a key role in her confidence coming into The Standard Portland Classic.
“It feels great to just play really well my first LPGA event,” Iwai said. “Kind of gives me a lot of confidence going into the school year.” – Akie Iwai
