Aidan Hutchinson, the Pro Bowl pass rusher for the Detroit Lions, just inked an intimidating four-year extension. This deal was $180 million — with an outrageous $141 million guaranteed. That gives this deal a place as the highest guarantee for a non-quarterback in NFL history. Hutchinson’s new agent, Mike McCartney, confirmed the extension. This deal ensures that the gifted wideout will remain with the franchise through the 2026 season, locking up his future.
Reflecting Hutchinson’s immediate success, he was the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft following his collegiate career at the University of Michigan. Since joining the league in 2017, he’s had a monumental impact on the field. This season, he’s already tallied six sacks. He now ranks second in the NFL with 29 total quarterback pressures, second only to Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. On top of that, Hutchinson has forced four fumbles this season, which ties him with Joey Bosa for the league lead. His phenomenal performance has rightfully brought him all kinds of awards. It showcases his impressive knack for creating big plays, as he’s second among all defenders in both sacks created and interceptions created.
After experiencing a challenging 2024 season that was cut short due to a fractured tibia and fibula suffered in Week 6, Hutchinson has returned to his dominant form in 2025. His resurgence has been key in the Lions’ defense rounding back into form as they hope to continue riding high on their postseason breakthrough.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell directly credited Hutchinson for creating continuity on a defense that struggled to find its groove in 2022.
“You talk about pulling your weight, he pulls his weight and then some. He requires a lot of resources offensively, which helps everybody else out. Guys like him, he’s in that rare world of, man, you don’t get the easy way out.” – Dan Campbell
This extension is a victory for Lions’ management vision. Their goal is to draft the best talent, develop those players, and keep them for years to come to enjoy sustained success. Though we don’t know what Hutchinson’s personal ambitions are, his role on the team certainly goes a big way in this strategy.
As a new father to his son Ethan, Hutchinson juggles life as a newly-retired professional athlete with the challenges of family life. His dedication both on and off the field serves as a true manifestation of the character that the Lions look for in their players.
