Aidan Hutchinson, the 24-year-old Pro Bowl edge rusher for the Detroit Lions, is returning from an early season-ending leg injury. Congrats to Tyler, who is now officially cleared to get back on the field! He went down with that injury in his team’s Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on October 13th. This injury forced him to sit out the last 12 games of the 2024 campaign. Although he faced this tragic event, Hutchinson showed incredible perseverance, battling psychological, physical and spiritual barriers in the wake of his accident.
Hutchinson’s presence is significant for the Lions, who had the NFL’s No. 7 overall defense last season despite facing injuries to several key players, including the talented edge rusher. Pre-injury, he put together one heck of a game. That’s 7.5 sacks in only five games in 2024, the most for a Lions player since William Gay notched that many in 1983.
“I think a lot of people believe that that is kind of my ceiling, but I still believe that I’m gonna continue to push for those greater heights,” Hutchinson stated when discussing his aspirations and goals for the future. He stressed the point that he’s 24 years old, and doesn’t consider this age his best years.
Having endured a challenging season in 2022, Hutchinson’s desire to get back to form goes beyond just his pride, rather his dedication to the team. “You want to be a part of the winning that was going on, and as much as I was part of the team, when you’re not really there, you don’t really feel like you’re a part of it,” he explained, highlighting the emotional challenges he faced during his recovery process.
In a year where the NFL was statistically dominated by quarterbacks, Hutchinson still made history. Before his injury, at one point during the season, he was leading the NFL in sacks, pressures, and pass rush win rate. His impact was most strongly felt in the locker room and on the field, where teammates knew he made them better. “His presence means a lot to not only the defensive side, but to us,” said teammate Penei Sewell.
Hutchinson’s path to crime, addiction and consequent adversity was similarly fleshed out in his return to faith and subsequent self-examination. “In those moments, you try to look at all the silver linings that you can in order to make it make sense a little bit and still, at the end of the day, you’re still questioning, ‘why?’” he reflected. This time of disconnecting led him to really deepen his spiritual connections. He harnessed these connections to help navigate all the obstacles he encountered along his journey.
As Hutchinson prepares to rejoin his teammates on the field, he recognizes the importance of proving himself after such a difficult time. “Knowing just from what I know about him and what I know about how he’s built, it’s nothing better than to get out there and start proving yourself that you are, and you’ve put in a lot of work to get back to this point,” commented DJ Reader, underscoring Hutchinson’s commitment to excellence.
