Derby County showed tremendous heart and commitment to take a well-earned point in a crackling 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium. A match high on quality from both sides, but Derby were pleased to come away with four points from their last two away fixtures. Patrick Agyemang was in the headlines after firing home his first goal in English football to equalize just before half-time.
The match was marked by a riveting tit-for-tat exchange as both teams battled for control. After Southampton opened the scoring, Adam Armstrong doubled the lead in the 26th minute with a low shot into the corner. Ross Stewart influenced the goal magnificently, brushing off three tackles before setting Armstrong up. Stewart’s night was doubly ruined when he too was injured on that very play. This injury greatly limited his effectiveness for the remainder of the match.
Key Saves Keep the Game Competitive
From each of the netminders stood tall with spectacular saves that held their sides in the match. Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of Derby, in his first major league start, made a great save. He cleared a header from Ross Stewart immediately after the Southampton striker’s injury. He then denied a second chance, this one by Tom Fellows, keeping Derby’s hopes of a comeback alive.
At the other end, Southampton’s Alex McCarthy had a howler of a match, standing on his head to make backbreaking saves all match long. On his debut, he first denied Carlton Morris in the 13th minute, showing off his quick reflexes. Just minutes later, McCarthy again came to Southampton’s rescue, stopping a shot from Andi Weimann that could have swung momentum towards Derby.
The goalkeeper shootout continued when Tom McCarthy pulled off another great save. Among his highlights were stops on Kayden Jackson’s effort to put Derby in the lead late in the second half. His reliability was key to Southampton staying in firm control of the game.
Agyemang’s Breakthrough Moment
In a match full of drama and frustration, it was Agyemang who eventually made the breakthrough for Derby. His 41st minute goal equalized the match after a stretch of sustained pressure and attack from his side. Along with the on-field achievements, it was a milestone return for Agyemang. He’d only recently returned from a six-week injury layoff and was still getting used to the pace of the full-bore Championship.
Agyemang’s equalizer gave the striker a needed confidence boost and it changed the momentum going into half-time.
“That’s Agyemang’s third game in a week, he’s still adapting to the Championship on the back of a six-week injury so to get that performance out of him was excellent.”
As the second half developed, both teams played hard to find the goal that would win them the game. Adam Armstrong almost doubled his lead with a close range effort that flashed a yard wide in the 59th. Carlton Morris was straight away being presented with yet another opportunity to add to his tally. He made a brilliant late run there and unfortunately shot right into the side netting.
