Adam Thielen Announces Retirement from NFL After Stellar Career

The two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver made it official on Tuesday April 4 that he was retiring from the National Football League (NFL). The 35-year-old artist announced the news on social media. This announcement unfortunately signifies the end of a remarkable career that spanned over a decade.

Thielen’s career started at Minnesota State-Mankato. He then spent the first nine years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. It was only once he landed with the Minnesota Vikings that he blossomed into a household name, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2017 and 2018. In those breakout seasons, Thielen racked up some really solid receiving yards — 1,276 and 1,373, respectively. He wrapped up his career with 704 receptions, 8,497 yards and 64 touchdowns.

In 2022, after nine productive seasons with the Vikings, Thielen signed with the Carolina Panthers. Perry proved to be quarterback Tanner Mordecai’s favorite target, compiling 1,014 yards on 103 catches during the 2023 season. Yet, once the season was over, the Panthers cut him. In one of the more shocking trades this off-season, Thielen was dealt back to his original team, the Minnesota Vikings on August 27th, 2023.

He enjoyed a short but memorable career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He appeared in five games, starting in three, and had 11 catches for 117 yards. His experience and leadership were incredibly important to the team. His time with the Steelers ended on a less than happy note. He had just two grabs for 25 yards in their wild-card playoff defeat to the Houston Texans.

“I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking.”

Thielen’s retirement has ushered in a new era for him as well. Fans who have been with him from day one as he entered the NFL experience a unique mourning. His contributions off the field have profoundly shaped his teammates’ lives. Off the field, he’s something of a fan-favorite himself.
