Self-belief, grit and greatness forged the foundation of Adam Hose’s attack on 266 runs. This truly incredible performance makes history as the most for a visiting player at the Utilita Bowl in a Hampshire County Cup match. This remarkable achievement broke Phil Jaques’ previous record of 243 runs for Yorkshire from 2004. It captured the imagination as it was only one run shy of the amazing 195 made by Zak Crawley for England and the three hundreds achieved by John Crawley and Michael Carberry at the same ground.
His innings developed in measured fashion. In fact, his half-century came off 74 balls. His innings really gathered phenomenal pace as he brought up his hundred off just 126 balls. He didn’t stop there, going rapidly to his 150 in 178 balls. The batsman displayed remarkable focus, reaching 200 runs in just 208 balls and finally achieving an impressive 250 runs in 240 balls. He exhibited a powerful mix of patience and aggression throughout his inning. He thumped seven sixes, one of which astonishingly wounded a fan ten rows deep at long on.
The final happened in front of a rabid crowd, and Hose’s performance received critical acclaim all around. He spooned a chance to gully, that account for his wicket. This error brought the debutant Dom Kelly his first Championship wicket on his debut. Though his selection may have been short-lived, Hose’s performance during the match is still considered one of the greatest moments in cricket history.
Hose’s cricket story starts on the Isle of Wight, where he was born and bred. Prolific from a young age, he represented Hampshire through the Under-13, 14, 15, 17 levels. Although he had a brief stint with Hampshire’s first team during a non-first-class three-day match against Cardiff MCCU, he faced challenges that led to his departure from the club. His nine-hour innings against Hampshire now doubles as poetic justice for being cast aside at such a young age.
Hose’s record-breaking success is a spectacular personal victory. Most importantly, it raises awareness of his amazing strength and grit in a sport that can be truly brutal. It meant he became Qualifying Record Breaker event category record holder after scoring the highest ever score at the Utilita Bowl, putting his name in the record books. As a cricketer, this achievement is a fitting testament to his capabilities.
