In-form Durham’s 34-year-old cricketer, Ackermann, was in fantastic touch in Durham’s recent victory over Nottinghamshire where he rattled off a sensational 67-ball 134. His phenomenal showpiece featured two hundreds, 116 in the first innings and 124 not out in the second. Despite his fighting spirit, victory was beyond Durham’s reach, with Notts winning in the end by a country mile.
In the opening innings, Ackermann had stolen the show with an incredible 116 runs. His stunning attack on the England bowlers took Durham to 378 and that proved too steep a target. This was the most impressive of those innings. It was his first century of the game and applied massive pressure to Notts. He built an impressive connection with star teammate Clark. Collectively, they lifted their partnership score to 971, allowing Durham to stay no more than 201 runs behind the leaders after first-innings play.
Five overs after reaching his first hundred, Ackermann completed his second century—the first of his career. Ackermann had already established himself as a spiral talent with an exhilarating 124-run knock in the second innings. This match-winning achievement was his 28th century in first-class cricket. His innings was an excellent showcase of both his class and grit at the crease.
That collaborative relationship between Ackermann and Clark was key for Durham. Their partnership produced 145 runs, giving the side the platform to come back strong against Nottinghamshire’s bowling line up. Their efforts represented a long and determined fight, highlighting Durham’s resilience in challenging circumstances.
In Durham’s case, Ackermann’s firing happened to be at the worst possible moment. It took Tongue to bowl him out by deflecting an inside edge onto the stumps. This dismissal killed a potentially lucrative partnership with Clark. His departure from the square marked the end of a terrific stint in the innings. It wrecked Durham’s chances of simply scoring enough runs to counter Nottinghamshire’s strong position.
Although Ackermann scored brilliantly in each innings, it wasn’t sufficient to prevent Durham’s inevitable defeat. The team had some big challenges to overcome over the course of the game and were unable to rise up to Notts’ level of play on the field.
