Aaron Rodgers, the esteemed four-time NFL MVP, has become a free agent following his release from the New York Jets. The decision to part ways with the 41-year-old quarterback was made by the Jets’ new regime, including General Manager Darren Mougey and Head Coach Aaron Glenn. This move now opens the door for Rodgers to sign with any team he chooses, with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers expressing interest in acquiring his talents.
The Jets carried Rodgers' full cap charge of $23.5 million until June 1, after which it dropped to $14 million. By designating him as a post-June 1 cut, the Jets are able to spread his whopping $49 million cap hit over two seasons, easing the financial burden on the team. The release of Rodgers, while significant, was largely a formality, as the Jets had informed him of their intentions during a face-to-face meeting on February 6.
Rodgers' departure from the Jets marks the end of his two-season stint with the team. Despite his release, he has not publicly commented on the situation since the Jets decided to move on. However, it is known that he has been in discussions with both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are keen on bringing his experience and prowess to their respective rosters.
The Jets announced their intention to release Rodgers on February 13, which allowed him the opportunity to begin speaking with other teams. As a free agent, Rodgers is now at liberty to explore his options and potentially join a new team that aligns with his career aspirations and goals.
