A.J. Brown has emerged as one of the most interesting players to premise Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive conversation around. His electrifying game in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams turned that excitement into a buzz. The wide receiver recorded six catches for 109 yards and one touchdown, demonstrating his potential as a key player for the team. Despite this big-time performance, Brown’s season-long stats tell the story of a player that has struggled for consistency.
It helps to have a safe target like Brown, who through four games this season has 14 catches for 151 yards and a score on 28 targets. He’s had a tough time keeping that going though, being held to 27 yards or fewer in three of those matchups. His play in the Eagles’ 31-25 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week was cause for concern. He was held to just two receptions for 7 yards on nine targets.
Nick Sirianni, head coach of the Eagles, stressed what Brown brought to the rest of the team’s success. He acknowledged that Brown’s frustration might stem from his desire to contribute more significantly to the Eagles’ wins. Sirianni stated, “Obviously, A.J. is very important to this football team, I know he wants to contribute and do the things he’s capable of doing.”
Despite the team’s undefeated record of 4-0 this season, Brown’s relatively quiet start has raised questions among fans and analysts alike. He’s on pace for only 10.8 yards per catch. That’s well below his career average of 15.6 yards, a perfect illustration of the chasm between Burks’ talents and what he’s been able to accomplish recently.
Brown’s take over in Week 3 provided a picture of how much he could affect a game. The inconsistency in the wake of that game has opened the door to questions about his role in the offense going forward. His refusal to talk to reporters after the Buccaneers game, by contrast, has sparked a barrage of speculation about his mental state.
Sirianni said he was sure Brown would be mentally focused and committed to the team. He mentioned that Brown is motivated to aid the Eagles in getting a win. To be sure, he has run up against serious obstacles along the way. “He wants to contribute into these wins, and he’s had a couple of games where he hasn’t been able to for different reasons,” said Sirianni.
Brown himself has hinted at his dissatisfaction with the team’s ultra-conservative play style this season. He commented, “Me personally, I truly believe we’ve got so many good players on this team, and at times you can feel like we’re being conservative.” And he’s not just looking for some deep shots either, he says he’s ready for some more dangerous playcalling. With this strategy, he and other federal players could make a more meaningful difference.
