Former Australia cricketer Damien Martyn, 54, was hospitalized in Queensland, after falling seriously ill from suspected meningitis. Martyn, who was put into an induced coma as a part of his recovery, has the entire cricket community rallying behind him. His family and long-time partner, Amanda, are apparently with him at this difficult time.
Martyn from 1992-2006 had an exemplary, award winning career. He finished with a solid career 4,406 Test runs at an average of 46.37 over 67 matches in his national colours. He was instrumental in four Ashes series and played in arguably Australia’s best ever Test side that dominated world cricket in the mid to late 90s.
Martyn rejoiced in a stunning ODI career to match his Test match triumphs. He scored 5,346 runs in 208 matches with astounding average of 40+. He was the first to score 5 centuries and 37 fifties in ODIs. Or Martyn’s influence in the 2003 Cricket World Cup final. His tremendous knock of 88 not out against India sealed that win for Australia.
Martyn turned out for Yorkshire, again as an overseas player in 2003, as his reputation for being one of cricket’s most aesthetic talents continued to grow. His tireless work for the sport both on and off the field won him two World Cup championships while playing.
Martyn’s state has elicited an outpouring of love from his former teammates and the wider cricket community. Former Australian team-mate Darren Lehmann was supportive in his message, saying.
“Lots of love and prayers…Keep strong and fighting legend.” – Darren Lehmann
As Martyn continues to fight this life-threatening condition, the cricket community is sending him every wish and prayer for a speedy recovery. Fans, fellow players and supporters across the globe are directing their love, thoughts & prayers to Martyn. Their thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this trying time.
“He is getting the best of treatment and Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes.”
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg also shared his sentiments, stating,
“The best wishes of everyone at Cricket Australia and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time.”
As Martyn battles this serious health challenge, the cricket community remains hopeful for his swift recovery. Fans, fellow players, and supporters continue to send their thoughts and prayers to Martyn and his family during this difficult period.
