Rangers took a firm step ending their winless streak with a formidable 2-1 victory over St Mirren at Ibrox Stadium. This has been a remarkable transformation for Rangers. They had not won in their previous four league meetings against St Mirren. The match happened on a bite chilly fall afternoon, both teams hungry for every point as the league season pushes along.
After a save on a free-kick, the 22nd minute saw Thelo Aasgaard open the scoring for Rangers, taking advantage of a well-scripted set-piece. Jayden Meghoma provided the assist, demonstrating the team’s strategic approach to dead-ball situations. The home side certainly made the most of their advantage early on, pushing the visitors back and controlling much of the first half.
Rangers wasted no time doubling their advantage immediately following the interval. Emmanuel Fernandez slotted home an opener following an impressive combination assist from Youssef Chermiti. By this time, Rangers were very much in command of the game, demonstrating impressive movement and tactical prowess.
The game turned completely when referee Ryan Lee made the controversial decision to go to the VAR system. Speculation abounded that he was checking a handball against Fernandez. After examining the play on his video assistant referee (VAR) monitor trackside, Lee called a penalty in favor of St Mirren. Mikael Mandron stepped up to convert the penalty and brought St Mirren level, cutting Rangers’ lead in half.
Even though they were back in the tie, St Mirren found themselves unable to take any of a variety of encouraging chances to level things up. They had three high-quality chances that they missed. Notably, Marcus Fraser’s effort from another penalty was denied by Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland, who delivered a crucial save.
As the game continued, St Mirren kept pushing on late, looking for an equalizer. Rangers kept their heads in front and saw in to a superb victory until the end of the game. The impressive win saw Rangers cut the gap on league leaders Celtic to six points, keeping alive their hopes of a title defence.
