Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Burden had an outstanding performance on a just as equally tough matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, he sustained a quad strain on the last play that leaves his status for next week in doubt. Bears’ loss to the 49ers by a shootout score of 42-38, it would have been easy for Burden’s historical performance to get lost.
Burden set a … season high with eight catches (138 in total) and a touchdown. In doing so, he further established himself as one of the “big three” primary weapons in Chicago’s offensive attack. Over the past three games, he’s emerged as the top offensive option. 18 receptions, 289 yards so far! This recent surge in performance highlights Burden’s development and importance to the team’s strategy as they navigate the challenges of the season.
The injury comes right as Burden was starting to hit his groove in his rookie season. This blow comes after he missed Week 16 due to an ankle injury. That injury had set him up to miss a huge part of the season that always proves to be the most important. He’s caught 44 balls for 617 yards and two TDs. These remarkable statistics serve to illustrate his key contributions since the Bears selected him with the second round of this year’s draft.
After the game, the Bears tweeted that Burden will receive further testing on Monday. That in turn would help gauge the severity of his quad injury. The timing of this injury is doubly unfortunate, as it comes one week after one of his best performances of the season. The team and fans, too, will be eager to see how this affects his role going forward.
