Vikings Aim to Secure Brian Flores as Defensive Coordinator

The Minnesota Vikings are working hard to avoid losing Brian Flores to another defensive coordinator gig. They’re doing that now, even before the current NFL season has finished. Hired by head coach Kevin O’Connell in January 2023, Flores has been instrumental in shaping one of the league’s top defenses over the past three years.

In the shadow of Lawrence, under Flores’ leadership the Vikings’ defense has transformed into a tenacious, ball-hawking force. They are always fifth at negative expected points added per play. It’s been his creative approach to the game and style of communication with his players that has helped make them so successful on the playing field. O’Connell has made it no secret that he’d like to see Flores around the organization for as many years as are available.

That was the tone of head coach Sean O’Connell when sharing his excitement for Flores’ future on the team. What struck him was their back and forth repartee and the excitement between the two of them for making something happen.

Against all expectations, Flores had a wildly successful run with the Vikings. Yet, like last offseason, he struggled when he was interviewed for three head coaching jobs and came away with no offers. A pending lawsuit against the NFL and three teams — the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and his former employer, the Miami Dolphins — loomed over his candidacy. This controversy played a huge role in derailing his campaign. Flores alleged discrimination as it relates to his interview processes, which has garnered extensive attention across the league.

Flores’ contract with the Vikings is set to expire in a matter of weeks. Both sides are still engaged in fantastic conversations about prolonging the agreement. O’Connell made it clear that continuing to lock in Flores’ services will be a chief aim of the organization moving forward. Until that time comes, he made it clear Flores is key to the team’s day-to-day operations. Furthermore, he focused on how big her impact was on the team’s development as a whole.

“I definitely want Brian Flores to be our defensive coordinator in Minnesota,” O’Connell reassured. In fact, he emphasized just how valuable Flores will be to their team.

The Vikings aren’t concerned about the past or even this season. They are each committed to ensuring Flores remains their defensive unit’s captain. Our team has developed a stellar pedigree. Retaining this centerpiece would be important for their hopes to make deep playoff runs in the coming seasons.
