Sonam Yeshey, a 22-year-old left-arm spinner from Bhutan, has already carved out a niche in cricket history. She was recently a T20I star, too—recording the best-ever bowling figures of 7/8 against Myanmar. In a shocking display of dominance, she took eight wickets for seven runs, making her team win by 82 runs. This incredible achievement all took place in the third of a five-game series played in Gelephu.
In that match, Bhutan batted first and made a score of 127 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Sonam Yeshey’s brilliant bowling attack ripped apart the Myanmar batting line-up, who could only manage to score 45 runs before getting all out. Shriya’s remarkable bowling figures of 8-7 from only four overs helped Bhutan annex the title. This performance ensured that she held the best-ever T20 bowling figures in both men’s and women’s international cricket.
During the entire bout, Sonam Yeshey exhibited her finesse and accuracy. Of her eight wickets, six were caught, one bowled and one LBW were the modes of dismissal. Her performance reflects not only her talent but the growing strength of Bhutan’s national cricket team, which is an Associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and currently ranks 77th in the ICC men’s T20 rankings.
Bhutan’s cricketing structure provides great support to its players, with 36 athletes on central contracts. Of them, 18 players are veterans of the men’s national team, which continues to grow with its exposure on the international stage. Sonam Yeshey broke the record with a commanding performance. This accomplishment will undoubtedly motivate other players on the national team and further stimulate the development of cricket in Bhutan.
