Jacob Bethell Eyes Long-Term Spot as England’s Number Three

Jacob Bethell, the promising young cricketer, is determined to establish himself as England’s number three batsman following a challenging yet productive year. 2025 – Bethell limited to just three first-class matches. He went on to knock out Ollie Pope for the decisive Boxing Day Test, an important career achievement.

Bethell was a revelation in his three Tests against New Zealand last year. Prior to that he had batted no higher than number four at first-class level. In the final, he scored a very important 40 runs. This was all accomplished just after England sent Brydon Carse in as a pinch-hitter in England’s second innings, chasing 175 runs. This innings was hugely influential. More importantly, it helped England to a historic victory and put an end to their 18-match winless run down under.

I’d really love to simply lock in any position on the squad. If you’re in the XI and contributing to winning I’m pretty happy with that,” Bethell stated, expressing his desire to cement his position within the squad.

That hasn’t meant that the young cricketer’s path has been completely trouble free. An injury marred Bethell’s chances for international glory. At the same time, Ollie Pope stomped his gastronomic authority in a particularly destructive July at the beginning of that home summer. He remained focused on the task and now looks forward to the final Ashes Test in Sydney with a sense of added excitement. There, he will hope to cement a long-term spot in the England setup.

Providing regular opportunities to play red-ball cricket is key to Bethell’s development, according to former England captain Alastair Cook. It’s all about adapting your playbook to the circumstances. I think Jacob does too and unfortunately he needs it in red-ball cricket to truly learn. He is exceptionally talented, but he needs to be brought up to red-ball cricket,” said Cook.

Despite the challenges, Bethell has shown resilience. He’ll integrate to England’s white-ball plans at the start of the new year. After that, he’ll head back to India’s ever colorful and lucrative premier league (IPL) to join Indian cricketing great Virat Kohli on Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Bethell’s numbers further exemplify his scoring acumen in clutch situations. In the second innings of Tests, he averages close to 67, while his average in the first innings sinks to a mere nine. Yet this performance inequality can lead some to question his reliability. Beyond that, it exemplifies his talent to perform at the highest level exactly when it matters most.

As he plans for the future, Bethell is conscious that there is room for significant improvement. “I’ve still got a lot more to do to call it my position,” he admitted. The 22-year-old cricketer understands that maintaining his place on the team is a journey that requires continuous effort and adaptation.

Bethell might have his next opportunity to play first-class cricket in June. England will face New Zealand, their first Test of what is to be an action filled home summer. He continues his journey to create a long-term legacy ahead of the final Ashes Test. All the while, he’s looking to expand upon his recent successes.
