Ben Stokes, the captain of the England cricket team, expressed immense pride in his players following their hard-fought victory in the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Beyond ending a cumulative 18-match winless streak for England on Australian soil, this victory was particularly special for Stokes. After having previously competed in 12 Tests down under without tasting success, he was well aware of the task laid ahead. With this victory, Stokes has only bolstered his legacy. At 34 years old, he goes into what is probably his last Ashes tour to Australia.
The pressure on the England team was acute after a controversial mid-series breather in Noosa. As Stokes explained, underneath all that hoopla was an indication the players weren’t looking at it as a distraction. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the game itself, stating, “The way we went about it, not only in public, in terms of all the media and all that sort of stuff, was crucial.”
Stokes highlighted the role of the leadership group, which includes Brendon McCullum and other senior players, in maintaining focus amidst external pressures. He remarked, “The way in which the leadership group were able to keep as much focus as possible on the cricket was important.” This unity helped create an environment where the team’s players could focus wholly on their showing, at a make-or-break hour.
After the game, Stokes looked back on the match and, on a personal level, conceded that such win “does mean a lot” to him. He and fellow teammate Joe Root savored their long-awaited victory, snapping a 17-Test winless run on Australian soil. Stokes called it “pretty special” to shake the ghosts of past disappointment. He stated, “I’ve been on a couple of tours before where it’s not gone too well so to end up on the right side of a result after a long period of time is a pretty special feeling.”
As England looks ahead to the fifth and final Test in Sydney, Stokes reiterated that his team remains focused on achieving another victory. He remarked, “We still have one more Test to go and want to get two results our way.” The mental toughness that defines this team is evident with their resolve to finish the series on a positive note.
Stokes admitted it was tough going out there on the day, especially in terms of how leadership attributes get put to the test in tense moments. He said, “You get tested as leaders within sporting teams and organisations in different ways. That was a test of character, a test of qualities of leadership.”
Stokes knows how to separate focus from his players, to which he has confidence they have learned how to compartmentalize. “Once you do cross that line onto the field you put everything else to one side and your focus switches to what you need to do,” he explained. That attitude has been key to locking in their hard-won success in the past few years.
