Middlesbrough were held to a goalless draw by Blackburn Rovers in a tense Championship battle on Teesside. The match, played under clear skies and 70-degree temperatures, saw both teams fail to create goals out of promising chances on the attack, resulting in a scoreless draw. It could be a big disappointment for Middlesbrough with this result. They hope to repeat their early season form with their new head coach, Kim Hellberg, after a loss to Bristol City in their most recent match.
The match highlighted Middlesbrough’s ongoing struggles in front of goal, with the chances created providing another opportunity to score. Todd Cantwell almost broke the deadlock early on but fired into the side-netting, while Ryan Hedges had his low strike blocked by Callum Brittain, who was lining up against his former club.
Missed Opportunities for Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough did not create a clear cut opportunity in any of the 90 minutes. In the opening period, Alex Gilbert came just inches away from a breakthrough goal. Unfortunately, he was unable to capitalize on it, squandering an opportunity that could have changed the game’s momentum. Matty Litherland put Platz on the board with the well-placed finish. It didn’t have anywhere near the power required to really test Blackburn’s goalkeeper Sol Brynn, who saved comfortably.
Unfortunately for the home side, the second half was a repeated exasperation. Axel Henriksson then sent Yuki Ohashi racing clear from the halfway line. Sadly, Ohashi got it wrong and he ended up pulling his shot wide of the right-hand post. Tommy Conway and Hayden Hackney both attempted shots in the 18-yard box, but Blackburn’s resolute defense blocked their efforts effectively.
“The only way we can survive is if we stick together and everyone can contribute something to the team. We want to win games, but sometimes you have to adapt to the opponent and the situation.” – Kim Hellberg
Blackburn’s Strong Defensive Performance
Blackburn Rovers’ impressive Sunderland-like rearguard performance snuffed out plenty of Middlesbrough’s flames before they even got spark generation. Valerien Ismael, Blackburn’s head coach, pridefully hailed the “discipline and organization” needed to earn results on the road. The newly organized squad followed the game plan to the letter, restricting attack-minded Middlesbrough to a trickle of chances.
In fact, Whittaker had an amazing once-in-a-lifetime chance to do just that. He teed himself up and launched a powerful shot that struck the inside of the far post! Blackburn were able to hold their nerves and preserved their clean sheet. Ismael expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating:
“If you want to get something at Middlesbrough, you have to play at the limits and the boys did that well.” – Valerien Ismael
Looking Ahead
After Middlesbrough’s goalless draw with Blackburn denied them a much-needed victory, the Teessiders will be looking for solutions as they head into vital matches. The unit has to find ways to penetrate enemy ranks. Only then do they have any hope of moving up the Championship standings. Even after such a huge loss Coach Kim Hellberg was still hopeful on his squad’s future potential.
Hellberg stated, “I think this is our way to work. We know we are well organized and we want to give ourselves a chance to stay in any game with our attitude.” The next few weeks will be a momentous time for Middlesbrough. They will be clawing tooth and nail to recover and win critical points in their campaign.
