DK Metcalf, the Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, has just been suspended by the league. Due to the injury, he will be out for the last two games of the regular season. The suspension follows a conflict with an opponent during a game with the Detroit Lions on Sunday. This is the incident for which Metcalf confronted a fan, resulting in the indefinite banning of the fan. This decision has gigantic monetary implications for Metcalf. It voids $45 million in future guaranteed money left in his contract.
The furor started after Metcalf’s CBS television poaching appeared on the CBS national charade. He took a moment to have a discussion with an enthusiastic fan wearing a blue wig that hung over the first-row railing at Ford Field. During the first half of the game, Metcalf ran up to the fan. He yanked on the man’s shirt collar then violently pushed him back. Footage of this exchange went viral on social media. In another viral moment back on the pitch, this popular clip features one astonished fan saying, “That was the goal, peeps,” immediately following the scuffle.
This incident is notable only for the fact that Metcalf had already reported the same fan to Seahawks security. He moved to intervene as a result of an earlier encounter during another game in Detroit. After his suspension appeal hearing, the NFL revealed that it would be reaching out to the Detroit Lions. They just want to understand the fan’s behavior and how it fits into the league’s overall policies.
As a direct result of this suspension, Metcalf will lose $555,556 in salary. The incident surrounding the situation was covered by head coach Mike Tomlin, who discussed the difficult position that athletes are put in when interacting with supporters.
“I just think volatile rhetoric is a component of our business today, unfortunately,” – Tomlin
Tomlin expressed support for Metcalf despite the challenges surrounding him, stating that his day-to-day actions make him “easy to support.” Yet even as Metcalf encounters punishment and censure, Scott noted it creates an opportunity for other defenders of democracy to show up and succeed him. With Metcalf sidelined and another wide receiver, Calvin Austin III, dealing with a hamstring injury, Tomlin suggested that second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson may see increased playing time in the closing games of the season.
