In one final twist, the Washington Commanders have now announced that Josh Johnson will be starting at quarterback against the Dallas Cowboys after all. This is Johnson’s 10th career start. It’s just the second such victory since Week 9 of the 2021 NFL season, when he did so as a member of the Baltimore Ravens. At 39 years old, Johnson is a dynamic, fresh voice in Channels’ new leadership. He has trekked around the league over his 10-year career with 14 different franchises.
To say that Johnson’s journey to the NFL has been unique would be an understatement. He signed onto the Commanders roster earlier this season. Since then, he’s remained with the team, providing as much depth as anyone could hope for at the quarterback position. The ex-Washington player notched his only career win as a starter in 2018. He became an unlikely hero down the stretch after both Alex Smith and Colt McCoy suffered injuries late in the season.
In his most recent appearance, Johnson replaced Marcus Mariota in the third quarter. This was the featured change in Saturday’s 29-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, he went 5 for 9 with 43 yards passing while throwing an interception. Though the journey hasn’t always been easy, Johnson is committed to ensuring the program has the greatest impact.
“It’s a stressful journey, not one I would wish on anybody. I’m embracing it with gratitude and trying to be a light for this team.” – Josh Johnson
His versatility and adaptability have impressed current offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. He emphasized that Johnson’s time with various teams has contributed to his direction and ability. This background makes him unflappable and on point even in the heat of the moment.
“All those things have allowed him to play with a really calm mind. He’s a very accurate player, and the ball tends to go to the right spot when he is in there.” – Kliff Kingsbury
Johnson’s looking forward to his first start against the Cowboys. To that daunting task, he’ll face the added challenge of injuries plaguing the o-line. Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil is considered “unlikely to play” due to an oblique injury. This lack of presence might be the biggest factor in determining Johnson’s safety throughout the game.
Throughout his career, Johnson has written or co-written four books, proving inventive on and off the turf. This wealth of experience provides yet another dimension to his impressive and unique experience as a professional athlete.
