Celtic Women have appointed Grant Scott as their new head coach. He takes over the role from Elena Sadiku, who departed the club to pursue other creative avenues. Scott arrives at Celtic after a fruitful spell at Hibernian. There, he took the team to unprecedented successes, including a Scottish Cup and League Cup victory in 2019.
Elena Sadiku made her own history in January of 2024 becoming the first female head coach of Celtic, men or women. Under her leadership, the team celebrated significant milestones, including their first-ever Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) title and qualification for the Women’s Champions League group stage for the first time. Her work with the club has created positive examples and high expectations as she heads off to new adventures.
Elena has laid the groundwork for where Celtic Women should go next. We are all thankful for her leadership on and off the field and wish her well in her new endeavors,” added the club spokesperson.
Joining Celtic is second acolyte Grant Scott, who worked alongside the coaching staff at various clubs. His extensive coaching background includes spells with Hearts, St Johnstone, Glasgow City and Durham Women. He famously led Hibernian to their first top-flight league title in 18 years before leaving for Barnsley. Now, he’s intent on mimicking that success at Celtic. The team now finds themselves in fourth place in the SWPL standings, behind Rangers and Hearts, who are tied for second/third place, respectively. Fourth-placed Glasgow City is the league’s top team, holding a seven-point lead over Celtic.
“It is a huge honour to join Celtic and I look forward to carrying on the great work at the club, to push on and bring even more success to Celtic,” said Scott upon his appointment.
Scott’s thrilled to lead the women’s program at such an important inflection point. The state-of-the-art facility should significantly increase the quality of training that the players receive. “I’m excited to join at a time when the new Barrowfield Training Centre is giving our women’s team every opportunity to develop, providing the players and those coming through the Academy with the best possible environment to train and come to work each day,” he added.
Scott moves into his new role with boldness. He intends to expand on Sadiku’s legacy and push Celtic Women to the forefront of the sport as a competitive force. “I have experience of bringing success to clubs and, ultimately, this is what we will all strive for again, to ensure that Celtic can be at the very top of the women’s game,” he stated.
