Drake Maye’s electrifying escape act could become a legendary New England Patriots moment. He conducted a picture perfect nine-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that served as a dazzling display of what the developing NFL QB can do. For Maye, this victory was quite the redemption arc, as he too had come under fire after his team’s disappointing showing from last season.
In a signature performance, Maye went 31/44 passing. He racked up 380 passing yards while tossing two touchdowns and one interception. It was his first NFL 300-yard passing outing. It exposed something even more extraordinary—his resilience in the face of pressure.
That final drive was capped off in dramatic fashion with a 20 yard touchdown pass to WR Mack Hollins. The play really set the stage for the Patriots’ incredible late-game comeback. Maye continued to find success, completing a 9-yard pass to Stefon Diggs before executing a crucial 21-yard catch-and-run on fourth-and-2. Diggs quickly became his main target, leading the team with nine receptions for 138 yards on the day.
Despite facing intense pressure—47% of his dropbacks in the fourth quarter—Maye excelled in the final moments, completing 86% of his passes and averaging an impressive 9.9 yards per attempt. It’s this capacity to execute in high-pressure situations that’s earned him rave reviews from his head coach, Mike Vrabel.
“Just gritty. He got hit. They pressured. He just kept getting up and battling. He didn’t flinch,” – Patriots coach Mike Vrabel
Looking back on the loss last week, Maye admitted that it was a much-needed “wake-up call.” In his post-game comments, he highlighted how critical collective effort was in the hard-fought win over their cross-town rivals.
“So proud of this team. It took everybody. Trust, belief — I like our chances when we’re in those scenarios,” – Drake Maye
The game added a thrilling comeback edge with a winning touchdown. It opened with the 6-yard completion to Hollins and was quickly set up by a breathtaking 21-yard run from running back Stevenson. Boasting the ability to close out a game was no small improvement from last week’s dismal effort.
Maye expressed optimism about the team’s future: “It’s awesome to clinch the playoffs, but the goal is to win the division.” His leadership and determination have since become key components of the Patriots’ strategy moving forward.
