New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn spoke candidly about the team’s challenging season during a press conference on Wednesday. With a record of 3-12 and a recent loss to the New Orleans Saints that dropped their season standing to 5-10, Glenn reassured fans that the team has a plan in place moving forward.
Glenn’s focus has been on building the right culture to support the Jets. “From Day 1, we’ve been trying to set the foundation of what we want this team to be,” he stated. Fans are growing more frustrated on and off the field as the team continues to suffer. Waver on their path, Glenn does not. He emphasized the need for “real” dialogue with players, keeping them informed and aligned to the team’s culture and goals.
The Jets have faced crushing disappointments this year. Their offense has been an utter trainwreck, with only two total touchdowns scored during that three game span. The defense isn’t immune either, establishing a historic mark by going 15 straight games without a pick. These dark numbers criminally hawk this year as one of the worst seasons in franchise history. It’s particularly discouraging after they opened the year with an 0-7 record.
Despite these setbacks, Glenn’s confidence remains unshaken. He addressed the players’ understanding of the plan, stating, “We plan on going out there and playing our best and giving effort.” Behind that assertion is his focus on keeping positive energy and direction with the team.
Glenn gave an encouraging update on the status of QB Justin Fields, who is reportedly approaching a return from a knee injury. Fields has been out for the past few games, with Glenn making the controversial choice to bench him before that. Despite this move receiving much derided criticism, Glenn remains unapologetic for his decision to coach.
Brandon Stephens, a player on the Jets roster, voiced his support for Glenn’s leadership: “I believe in AG, I believe in his plan.” As his team endures the turbulence of this challenging season, this endorsement serves to reinforce the deep confidence that many players have in their coach.
As the Jets plan their future, they will be fighting a daunting challenge to become competitive again in the NFL. Glenn was honest about just how difficult the road ahead will be for the team and supporters though. “For the fans, listen, it’s going to be a tough road,” he noted.
Aaron Glenn is still in place as head coach, despite rampant speculation regarding his job security in recent weeks. This is followed by an even miserable season and the trading away of their two star defensive players Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. As it stands now, it looks like Glenn’s position with the organization will not be coming up for any sort of renegotiation.
