The Houston Texans’ offense is riding an impressive wave at an important juncture of the NFL season. Now, they’re riding a six-game winning streak and are in great position for a playoff spot. Quarterback C.J. Stroud’s return from a concussion has been a big part of their run back into contention, though. He’s made the Texans a more balanced and explosive offensive machine in the process.
Stroud, who missed his first and only game so far in Week 9 vs. the Denver Broncos due to a concussion, returned with a vengeance. Since returning, he’s thrown three touchdown passes with his best effort coming in a splashy win over the Arizona Cardinals. During this stretch, Stroud has only thrown one interception, showing a more disciplined approach to his decision-making while under pressure.
While he’s been dropped on six sacks since his return, Stroud’s experience with the protection problem in college has made him tougher. He took a ridiculous 52 sacks, which was the second-most in the entire NFL last season. This season, he already suffered 17 through the first eight games. His ability to withstand pressure is going to be very important, especially as the Texans offense needs to score more points.
With Stroud under center, the Texans put up an impressive 26.7 points per game. This defensive performance ranks them 11th best in the league during this stretch. Stroud’s ridiculous scoring streak is a testament to his individual talents. It points to a broader shift in the team’s approach thanks to first-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley. The newfound connection between an accurate and efficient passing attack and an explosive run game has completely rejuvenated the Texans’ offensive philosophy.
Stroud credits the season he spent away from the field for providing him a unique advantage with the Texans schematics. He stated, “I always say there’s things that you pick up on while you’re in it or away from it.” Perhaps this rejuvenated mindset is part of the reason he’s playing at such a high level as he’s led the Texans on their six-game win streak.
Recently on Texans Radio, coach DeMeco Ryans praised Stroud for displaying incredible efficiency and execution with his play on Sunday. He added, “I thought C.J. played a terrific game very clean, efficient, the whole way through. These types of praises make apparent Stroud’s development and maturity as a quarterback.
With December around the corner, Stroud’s radar is set on keeping things headed in the right direction. He emphasized the importance of performing well during this critical month, stating, “December is when you want to play your best ball, and every game is important and every game is hard.” His determination is born of urgency as the Texans make their final stand pushing toward football’s promised land, a playoff berth.
C.J. Stroud’s dynamic presence under center has, without a doubt, saved the Texans’ playoff hopes. Because of him, the team is enjoying a six-game win streak, which is tied for the third longest in the NFL this season. As each game comes with its own context and challenges, Stroud looks ready to lead his team through this crucial stretch.
