Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow recently addressed questions regarding his long-term future with the team, offering insights that reflect both optimism and uncertainty. During a press conference, Burrow discussed the challenges he has faced this season due to injuries, his commitment to the Bengals, and the unpredictable nature of the NFL.
Burrow had a rough season, playing through a severe turf toe injury that cost him nine games during the year. He continues to contend with serious health issues, but he is still motivated to continue performing. He promised to work hard and get on the field and help the team win.
“I feel like I’m up against the odds,” Burrow said, speaking to the pressures and factors that have limited his high-level play this season.
When pressed on what his future looks like with the Bengals, he only cryptically replied. He left the door open on playing for a different American team next summer. “A lot of crazy things happen every year,” he stated, acknowledging the often unpredictable dynamics of the NFL.
Despite this uncertainty, Burrow made it clear that he envisions himself as a part of the Bengals organization for years to come. I just can’t imagine, though, a world in which he wouldn’t be on the Bengals’ roster in 2026, he said. This comment builds on a history of Burrow’s loyalty to the only franchise that’s thanked him for gifting them a first overall pick.
Burrow just signed a huge $275 million contract extension in 2023. This deal catapults him into the ranks of the highest-paid players in NFL history.
On-field accomplishments
Burrow is a two-time Pro Bowler and a two-time MVP finalist. He wants to be at the same table as epic quarterbacks, such as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco. All of these players have found great success as wiggle players later in their careers.
I know that I’m going to do whatever it takes to get my body ready for these games and find long-term success, Burrow explained, continuing to demonstrate his commitment to being in the best shape possible.
Burrow’s musings about loyalty in the NFL were especially powerful. He understood that loyalty of players is full of pomp and circumstance. In a league where loyalty is defined by the next roster-flipping trade, that loyalty fades fast. “You consider [loyalty], too,” he admitted while breaking down the nuances of loyalty in the world of professional football.
While Burrow continues to look towards a bright 2024 in his own personal lens, there’s bigger-picture optimism. “I expect to play for a long time, and I expect to play well and consistently great for a long time,” he declared confidently.
