Philip Rivers, the veteran quarterback known for his prolific career, is set to make a surprising return to the NFL after more than 1,800 days away from the field. The 44-year-old, who retired following the 2020 season, has been activated by the Indianapolis Colts to address their pressing quarterback situation. Rivers will officially be added to the 53-man active roster on Saturday. He’s slated to make his first start this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
The last time Rivers stepped onto a field for a playoff game was back in January 2021 and he’s since into the life of retirement. His remarkable return has been creating quite a buzz in the Colts’ locker room. This week, Rivers practiced with the team, showcasing his leadership and skills, which have been deemed “pretty good” by head coach Shane Steichen.
The Colts just went through a difficult stretch at the quarterback position, leading them to contact Rivers in the first place. His experience and familiarity with the team’s offensive system made him an ideal candidate. During practice this week, Rivers showed that he could still efficiently run the offense.
“He’s here to be a great leader, a great teammate, go out there, operate the offense, get us in and out of the right plays,” said Steichen regarding Rivers’ mindset during his return.
Before his promotion, Rivers’ right arm and kicking legs were closely monitored after practices by the team. By all accounts, he’s done well with the abrupt transition back into high-level professional football.
Questions still linger about his health when he steps out to go up against a vaunted Seattle D. Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith voiced apprehensions about Rivers’ safety given the physical demands of the game at his age.
Rivers is returning to center stage. He no longer just bears the optimism of his new employers, but the anticipation of a fan base long denied a professional gridiron presence. His first game back will be a huge deal, indeed, signifying a new chapter in his still-storied career.
