Kris Boyd, a 29-year-old free agent former player for the New York Jets, was shot multiple times, including once in the abdomen on Nov. 16. The assault took place around 2 a.m. in front of Sei Less, an upscale restaurant known for its Asian fusion cuisine on West 38th Street in Midtown Manhattan. At the time of the shooting, Boyd was accompanied by his fellow teammates Jamien Sherwood and Irvin Charles. This tragic event led to the arrest of Frederick Green, who now faces extremely serious charges such as attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Though he was forced to deal with his own season-ending shoulder injury in training camp, Boyd has been as resilient as any. Just weeks before the shooting, he participated in a regional special teams meeting. At the end of it, by all accounts, he just completely lost it emotionally. This meeting was a testament to his dedication to his team, despite having to deal with difficult personal challenges himself. In the first days after the shooting, Boyd was photographed with a walker, as he started the long journey to recovery.
In March, Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets. This decision was a big step forward in his career. Prior to coming to the Jets he’d spent time with the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. His experience and leadership focus have made him a highly coveted member of the roster even after a few injury-riddled years.
In his latest health update, Boyd shared on social media that he was back in the hospital. This visit occurred almost two weeks after the shooting, as he had to endure chronic health complications due to the trauma. His finding statement belies the emotional pain he has endured since the accident. This week’s surprise appearance in a special teams meeting was the perfect example of his steel will. He wants to remain active with his team as he resumes his recovery.
Frederick Green’s actions have garnered significant attention, not only due to the violent nature of the incident but because of its implications for Boyd’s career and well-being. The Jets organization and fans across the league are coming together to support Boyd during this difficult time and wish him a quick recovery.
