In a remarkable display of resilience, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert demonstrated his determination in an overtime win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Only one week after he went under the knife to fix a fractured left hand, Herbert showed why he’s tough as nails, rushing for 66 yards. He had an up and down day in the contest, being sacked a career-high seven times.
Herbert’s injury occurred in the first quarter of last week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He hit full speed into the safety Jeremy Chinn. This injury limited his use of his non-throwing shoulder. Even with all that, he continued to storm across the field, hand-made glove created by the Chargers athletic training staff.
Herbert’s first half performance against the Eagles encapsulated the good and bad aspects of his young career to this point. He only played the first half, converting just 46% and racking up a paltry 39 yards. In fact, this performance ties as the sixth-fewest passing yards in his six-year NFL career. He was under a ton of pressure the entire game. In reality, he was under duress on 54% of his dropbacks, a new career high.
Even through all of these challenges, Herbert’s dynamic threat to run made all the difference. He converted three first downs on scrambles in one game alone. This year, he already has 18 first downs on scrambles, the most in a single season in his career. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh applauded Herbert’s performance, referring to him as a “superhero” for his grit and uplifting toughness.
“There are so many guys in that locker room that are fighting through so many different injuries and things worse than what I’m going through.” – Justin Herbert
Herbert’s unrelenting focus inspires everyone around him to compete at the highest level. It further lights up debate among fans and analysts alike about his potential as a leader of men. He’s dedicated to snaps under center and making any offense hum. His spirit is truly inspiring, despite formidable physical challenges.
The Chargers’ victory reflects the collective effort of the squad, but Herbert’s personal battle has stood out as a testament to his character. As the season progresses, fans and coaches alike will be watching closely to see how he continues to perform post-surgery and handle the pressures of leading the team.
