Darius Slay, a veteran cornerback with a distinguished career, has found a new home with the Buffalo Bills after being claimed off waivers. Slay, who recently parted ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers, had been a healthy scratch during the team‘s loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Steelers end up picking Asante Samuel Jr. over McFarland to elevate from the practice squad for the game. As such, they didn’t want to play Slay this time.
The 34-year-old cornerback played ten games for the Steelers, starting in nine of those games. During his time in Pittsburgh, Slay recorded 36 total tackles. His underrated stats are one tackle for loss, three passes defensed, and one fumble recovery. Though he’s done a lot for the team, the Steelers and Slay decided to mutually part ways on Tuesday, resulting in his release.
In a related transaction to make room for Slay, the Buffalo Bills cut cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram. This strategic change highlights the Bills’ desire to strengthen their cornerback depth in an increasingly competitive NFL.
Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Slay enjoyed a fantastic five-year stretch with the Philadelphia Eagles. His dynamic playmaking ability proved instrumental in their Super Bowl victory last season. Prior to that, he spent the first seven years of his career with the Detroit Lions. Through this nightmare, he stayed the course as he became one of the league’s most elite defenders.
The acquisition of Slay signals that the Bills remain intent on completing a re-make of their cornerback corps. Regardless, his deep knowledge and experience give him a great chance to claim a valuable spot on the team’s bench. With Slay’s departure to Buffalo, he leaves behind a legacy of knowledge and skill that he has shared with others. His insights would be valuable in expanding the Bills’ defensive strategies down the line.
