Somerset County Cricket Club announced that Will Smeed has signed a contract extension, ensuring he will remain with the team until the end of the 2027 season. The 24-year-old hitter has been a pillar for the club since breaking in during 2020. He was looking forward, he said, to deepening his Somerset journey, which was all very exciting stuff.
Smeed has been in excellent form in recent weeks. His superb piece of fielding in the T20 Blast final against Hampshire proved pivotal in Andy Flower’s decision to extend his contract. In that game, at Edgbaston in September, Smeed dazzled with a brilliant 94 off only 58 deliveries. His all-round performance won him the player of the match award and inspired Somerset to a third Blast title.
Since joining Somerset, Smeed has built an exciting track record in T20. In the 81 matches he scored 2,290 runs at an average of 30.13. Along the way he’s amassed a green-bowler licking 17 half-centuries. Last summer, he surprised everyone by becoming the first player in The Hundred’s short history to score a complete century, with 101 not out off just 50 balls for Birmingham Phoenix against Southern Brave.
Smeed’s wish to remain with Somerset is rooted in his deep attachment to the club and its supporters. He stated, “I love the group, I love the ground, I love the members and supporters, and I just love playing my cricket here.” This sentiment, while downplaying his own abilities, showcases his love for the organization as well as his long-term dream of helping them win.
Having delivered the news that he wants to carry on playing for Somerset, the contract extension was officially announced. He has ambitious plans to win the club’s first league titles since the 1930s. He reflects on what it took to win the Vitality Blast title as leaving him “hungry for more”.
