Chet Holmgren’s Resilient Journey from Injury to Championship Glory

One year into the Thunder’s extraordinary Chet Holmgren-led reclamation, it already feels overdue. He returned from a dangerous, life-altering hip fracture that caused him to miss most of last season. Following a 10-day break after clinching a championship in June, Holmgren returned to the gym with a focused intent: to enhance his physical strength and refine specific aspects of his game. His vision was audacious. In the midst of it all, he was looking to increase his strength by 10% – a lofty goal considering this offseason prep towards a second consecutive competitive season.

The offseason proved crucial for Holmgren. He was given barely a four-and-a-half-month window to do so after giving a grueling scenario of rehab and recovery, to say the least. He was on crutches for two weeks to begin with. After that he had another week in hospital and then three weeks of bed rest. Looking back on his time away from basketball, Holmgren admitted it was tough to witness the difficult reality of seeing his conditioning slip away.
