Danilo Gallinari is a veteran difference-maker. After a recent and inspiring 16-year run, he’s recently joined the Vaqueros de Bayamon—one of Latin America’s most famous basketball clubs—as a part-owner. Locally, the Vaqueros take pride in their significant league-leading total of 17 league championships. Their home games are at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum, a 12,000 seat arena located just outside San Juan.
While 37 years old isn’t out of the question, Gallinari isn’t looking to retire his sneakers just a year shy of his 40s. He’s excited to remain deeply involved in the sport he adores. Alongside this artistic reckoning, he takes on the demands of parenthood. With three children at home, Gallinari aims to engage in high-intensity activities with them, blending his personal and professional aspirations.
Gallinari’s path to this new chapter has been just as introspective as it has been intentional. He doesn’t hesitate to acknowledge that he “required basketball,” revealing how central the sport has been to his existence. His story of how he ended up joining fellow player Carlos Arroyo’s campaign to join the Vaqueros played out over a two-to-three-month conversation. During this time, they met regularly for coffee and played pickup games, solidifying their friendship and mutual respect.
The retired NBA star capped his final season in 2024 with the Milwaukee Bucks. His contract extended through the 2024-25 season, and he hoped to play at least that long. He talks about how much he appreciates the experience of playing for the Denver Nuggets. On Coach George Karl’s squad, he rejoiced in a remarkable 57 wins. His journey hit some major roadblocks. A serious knee injury knocked him out for the remainder of the 2012-13 season, and he was forced to miss all of the 2013-14 season.
Gallinari’s international experience includes representing the Italian national team, which faced Luka Doncic and Slovenia in the round of 16 during a recent tournament in September. Despite the ups and downs of his career, Gallinari has embraced his journey, acknowledging how it has shaped him as both an athlete and an individual. He’s fully accepted the trajectory of his career. ‘Peace’ is the word now on his heart as he’s moving into this new chapter of life.
