In an exciting matchup against the Denver Broncos, the Washington Commanders showcased their receiving talent, led by Zach Ertz and Terry McLaurin. Local favorite Zach Ertz dazzled the crowd with a career-best performance, notching 10 catches for 106 yards. With this accomplishment, he was the first Commander this season to break the 100 receiving yards mark! McLaurin was an offensive weapon with seven receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown on the night. Despite being on a snap count intended to limit him, McLaurin played significantly more than expected, demonstrating his resilience and skill.
The inaugural match began under the lights on a brilliant autumn night at FedExField. Supporters were entranced by an exciting match that had them hanging on every kick. The Commanders needed to get going at some point against the defensively challenged Broncos, entirely self-destructive on the day. Ertz and McLaurin both flashed their rare individual brilliance as playmakers. Their performances exposed just how explosive the Commander’s offense could be.
Zach Ertz’s record-setting performance proved to be the turning point for the team. His 10 catches for 106 yards cemented his place as the Commanders’ biggest threat in the passing game. Ertz’s ability to move the chains was crucial, as he consistently found openings in the Broncos’ defense.
“You can see the first-round talent ooze out of his play style,” said McLaurin, praising Ertz’s contributions to the game.
Terry McLaurin’s performance was even more impressive considering he was just coming off a recent injury scare. After a great return early in the season, McLaurin unfortunately re-injured that same quad. He still came back to action, but he was originally given a snap count expectation of just 25 snaps. He played 42 snaps in another overachievement, showing just how vital he is to his team’s offense.
McLaurin’s contributions included a touchdown catch against Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II, as well as two receptions for 14 yards when faced with man coverage. His 96 receiving yards tied him with Deebo Samuel for the most receiving yards in a single game for Washington this season.
“He’s very physical, he could win down the field,” McLaurin said of his own performance and ability to create plays.
The spotlight was on rookie receiver Treylon Burks as well, who left his own mark on the game with a touchdown reception. Burks, who had faced challenges earlier in the season, including a finger injury that sidelined him, made his presence felt. He had a key 19-yard catch on a third-and-25 during a game-tying drive to force overtime at the end of regulation. To make matters worse, he caught a 3-yard TD pass on a slant route.
Burks has had a slow start to the season, having recorded just 10 receptions for 149 yards in his first three games. After recovering from a right quad strain, he has recently started to put it all together. On the season, he has just five receptions for 77 yards through three games.
Defensive coach Dan Quinn was upbeat about Burks’ chances to carve out a role for himself going forward with the team.
“There’s going to be a big plan for you here,” Quinn stated, underscoring the coaching staff’s commitment to developing Burks’ potential.
The Commanders are planning for the long-term, and with great hope. With Ertz, McLaurin, and Burks the future looks bright for this receiving corps. They show agency, they act well under pressure. So as their teams compete to go as deep as possible this season, watch how pivotal their contributions will be.
