Embiid Returns in Thrilling Double Overtime Loss to Hawks

Unsurprisingly, fans were excited to see Joel Embiid back on the court. After three weeks on the sideline, he made his return in the Philadelphia 76ers’ exciting double overtime victory against the Atlanta Hawks. Despite Embiid’s efforts, the 76ers fell short, losing the game 142-134 in a chaotic finish marked by an unprecedented officiating miscue.

Embiid, who had sat out the past nine games with right knee soreness, was on the floor for a season high of 30 minutes. His return was signaling his recovery from a dangerous spill at Brooklyn last Friday night, which had resulted in a hyperextended knee. In fact, during the game against the Hawks, he went for 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting.

Tyrese Maxey was a bright spot for the 76ers, dropping an offensive 44 points. He swiped 8 rebounds and orchestrated 12 assists in an astounding 60 minutes on the court. Maxey expressed his determination during the game, stating, “I thought I was going to make them, and we’ll figure it out after that.”

Jalen Johnson delivered a remarkable performance for the Hawks, finishing with 41 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists.

The match featured a bizarre twist of fate. With just 0.3 seconds remaining, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse made the only tactical decision he could after a foul was called. Crew chief James Capers addressed the confusion surrounding this moment, explaining, “There was a miscommunication amongst the officials, and we thought when [Nurse] called the timeout that he wanted to challenge the play.”

Regardless of the outcome, the contest itself was an impressive display of skill and resilience from both teams. Maxey’s high-scoring output kept the 76ers competitive, while Embiid’s return provided much-needed support in the paint.

Postgame, Hawks coach Quin Snyder lauded his team’s fight in coming back to win the game. “I think it was more about perseverance than it was poise,” he remarked. As for the lawyers’ victory, he added, “We’re just happy it went our way.”

Embiid reflected on his comeback with optimism. They’ve given me my first chance to get back out on the court, and I couldn’t be more excited about that or the opportunity to keep developing my game. Anytime I’m shooting, I try not to shoot to make shots. Moving side to side, over and under, through the air, bouncing—tonight was really the emphasis on all those things. Tonight was a good step towards that.

The new face of the 76ers, Paul George, had no trouble acclimating, scoring 16 points along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He did it all in only 28 minutes of action. No Kristaps Porzingis for the ninth straight game due to illness.

VJ Edgecombe was back in action for the Hawks after missing three games with a calf injury. His leadership was invaluable to a team that found themselves in a fearful, rugged battle that forced both teams to their knees.

That double overtime thriller was only the second game since Embiid’s triumphant return. It reminded everyone just how wild the game of hoops can be, particularly as catastrophic officiating failures heightened the dramatic narrative in an already charged rivalry game.
