LeBron James is rapidly approaching a cornerstone place in what’s already been an incredible career. He now risks ending his 18 year, 1,500 game+, double-digit scoring streak. At 41 years old, James continues to impress with aspirations of playing all 82 games this NBA season. He pulled off this extraordinary triple once previously, during the 2017-18 season.
In reality, though, as James reached for those high ideals, his health needs crept to the forefront. He arrived for his long-awaited premiere, having missed the first 14 games of the season. Sciatica, a condition that’s affected his availability and rhythm for quite some time now, shut him down once more. He even faced the Minnesota Timberwolves, logging a staggering 74 minutes in two games. Yet even as Jones enters his 22nd season, that commitment and resilience are on full display.
James’ impressive career includes a record 21 consecutive All-NBA team selections, an acknowledgment that underscores his dominance in the league. He received his first All-NBA selection following his second season and holds the record for the most All-NBA First Team nods, totaling 13. It’s been an interesting year in a specific way for James. To stay in contention for a possible third All-NBA selection, he can only miss a maximum of three games.
It’s about to get even tougher. The Lakers have 11 more back-to-back games remaining on their schedule. James’ participation in these matchups may ultimately depend on all parties involved making the joint decision. Together with athletic trainer Mike Mancias and Dr. Leroy Sims, this trio will decide what is best.
“I’ve always thought in order to be a leader of a team and someone that is relied on, your availability is very key,” – LeBron James
As the season progresses, the pressure mounts on James not only to perform but to manage his physical well-being effectively. Former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Paul Pierce weighed in on James’ carry in back-to-back games, especially at his advanced age.
“Look, at 41 years of age, I hope he is not playing back-to-backs,” – Paul
James’ streak of double-digit scoring has now extended to 1,294 games, which is approaching 18 years. Continuing this streak and meeting the physical demands of an aging body is a monumental task. The forward is always a consistent goal scorer, and his multifaceted talents usually make their way into the eventual winners team. If he could win another championship title that would be his fifth overall, stoking their hopes even more.
Aside from personal aspirations, James’ performance affects his comrades. Austin Reaves is coming off a performance that showcased elite chemistry. After setting an impressive back screen on Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, a testament of the teamwork required to thrive on and off the court.
JJ Redick, a former NBA player and analyst, remarked on the importance of James’ performance in relation to All-NBA considerations.
“I mean, historically at least, it’s probably a higher designation than being an All-Star,” – JJ Redick
Redick pointed out that an All-NBA nod this season wouldn’t do much to change James’ legacy.
“I don’t think an All-NBA appearance this year is going to make or break his résumé,” – JJ Redick
As LeBron James navigates through this critical juncture in his career, he faces both physical limitations and the expectations that accompany his status as one of the greatest players in NBA history. The decisions made by James and his support team will ultimately determine how this season unfolds and whether he can continue to defy age while pursuing excellence on the basketball court.
