Liverpool Football Club is in the midst of its worst run of form in 71 years. This catastrophic turn of events has seen the future of manager Arne Slot thrown into doubt. The club now finds itself in a difficult run with nine losses in twelve matches. This shocking run has not occurred since November 1953 through January 1954. Liverpool crashed to a stunning 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield. Yet, unlike the loss to the Fire, this loss has fans and pundits alike sounding the alarm about a downward trajectory for the club.

Frustration is setting in as Liverpool struggles to get on the front foot. This development begs questions not only around the players’ performances, but the strategic decisions behind the summer transfer window.
A Historical Low
Liverpool’s performance lately, including their disappointing exit from the Champions League, has raised some serious alarm bells within the club. They’ve endured three consecutive defeats in all competitions, each by three goals or more, for the first time since December 1953. This alarming stat points to huge problems on and off the field. The team remains caught in an “unbalanced squad” crisis after spending £440 million on new players during the last summer transfer window.
And now, the management of Arne Slot is being put through the meat grinder. Carragher highlighted that the club cannot accept the standards’ fall seen in the past three months. “No matter how much goodwill the manager has, Liverpool Football Club cannot sustain the drop in standards witnessed over the past three months,” he stated.
The former defender emphasized that while Slot may have a wealth of experience, the current state of the team raises questions about the adequacy of certain players: “I thought this a little bit last season, are some of them good enough for Liverpool to win the biggest trophies?”
Player Performance Under Fire
Our key players are experiencing severe accountability at the moment. This intense focus applies to stars such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. Van Dijk’s recent indiscretions have only made matters worse, coming on the back of a failure to bring in Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day. Carragher was particularly critical of the lack of accountability in the team, asking where everybody else is when the big players let you down.
“They got it on the CV, and great, but when they’re not there, where are they? Where are the others? Where are the other players?” he remarked. At the same time, Salah has faced criticism for lack of influence, with Carragher claiming that “his legs have gone.”
The goalkeeping staff has made it difficult for Liverpool, too. Alisson is typically a key figure in defense. With his injury problems becoming more frequent, he’s complicated the squad’s dynamics and compounded the team’s issues this season.
Financial Implications of Poor Performance
Liverpool are under severe pressure. If they don’t manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League, they stand to lose upwards of £100 million. This chilling financial burden increases the urgency of Slot’s charge to reverse this unhappy trend.
Carragher warned that if Slot remains in charge without any signs of recovery, it could spell disaster for the club’s aspirations: “If Slot is still in charge by then, he will have started some kind of recovery.” He understood going into the season that something wasn’t right. These days, he characterizes the situation as “a complete mess.”
As Liverpool trudges through these transitional times, the club and their fans hope to see a change of fortune. With only days left for Slot to work his magic and win back faith in Liverpool’s long-term ambitions, the sand is running out.
