Chargers’ Hampton Returns to Practice Eyeing Sunday Return

Chargers head coach, and former Michigan head coach, Jim Harbaugh is in the midst of a brilliant first season in Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the Chargers have redefined their offensive strategy, focusing on a dynamic rushing attack that features veteran running back Najee Harris alongside other emerging talents.

Omarion Hampton is just one special one. Unfortunately, he’s been on the shelf ever since, as he suffered a left ankle fracture in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders. This injury placed him on injured reserve, keeping him from helping the team in close games that need his impact now. After weeks of rehab, Hampton tested out his foot in practice on Tuesday, bringing with him fresh hopes for a return to the field.

Hampton, for his part, couldn’t hide his glee at being finally able to get back on the practice field. It’s great to be back out on the field! His impressive return couldn’t have come at a better time as the Chargers get ready to take on the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday. The coaching staff remains optimistic about his recovery, but Hampton’s playing status for the game is still pending doctor’s approval.

The Chargers own the 22nd overall pick in this April’s draft. We’re going to take it and use it to make our running game even more powerful. Coach Harbaugh clearly sees the potential for a devastating rushing attack. Bringing in another top-flight running back to pair with Harris and Hampton in the backfield could fully realize that vision.

Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman echoed similar sentiments when asked about Hampton’s development. Roman feels positive about both Hampton and another running back moving forward, emphasizing the importance of depth in their offensive strategy.

Hampton reflected on his time away from the game, admitting, “It hurt kind of. Sitting here can’t help my team.” His willingness to return for a second term is a testimony to his profound commitment. He’s looking to help lead a Chargers’ turnaround as one of the franchise’s most important seasons approaches.
