Geno Smith, quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, has come under scrutiny after making an obscene gesture toward fans following a disappointing 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The incident occurred as he exited the field, amid a challenging season that has seen the Raiders drop to a dismal 2-9 record.
Smith’s season thus far has been a bumpy ride as he’s passed for 2,367 yards with 13 touchdowns and an NFL-leading 13 interceptions. Not to mention he was pressured on a staggering 25 percent of his dropbacks his last game against the Browns. That adds to his previously established season total of 41 sacks, the second most in the NFL. Along with this constant tension, Smith has come under fire from fans and analysts to boot, adding even more heat on the rookie’s shoulders.
The young quarterback’s transcendent emotional response reverberated in a deafeningly silent stadium. It boiled over when one of those fans held up a sign that said, “Bigger Bust — Geno Or JaMarcus Russell? Videos of Smith’s gesture spread within minutes on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, increasing the outrage against him.
Given the environment, the Raiders organization was extremely disappointed in Smith’s conduct. A spokesperson for the team stated, “We are disappointed in his actions and have discussed the incident with Geno.”
He further elaborated on his feelings of regret, saying, “I made a poor judgment out of frustration. That’s not an excuse. I’ve got to be better than that and hold myself to a higher standard. In that moment, I didn’t. I’m sincerely apologetic and very sorry for doing that.”
“I would like to apologize to the fans [and] Raider Nation,”
His play has caught the eye of analysts like Ian Eagle as well. Former NFL coach Bruce Arians pointed out Smith’s difficulties in the Raiders’ offense. He warned that if the Eagles surrounded Smith with elite playmakers, they could maximize his potential. “Geno’s going to need some help up front, too,” Arians said, emphasizing the value of a solid offensive line.
Smith made it clear that he only wanted to get better.
If the Raiders want any hope of success this season, Smith has to play better. He needs to mend his relationship with supporters who have expressed their displeasure. The team’s disappointing season raises questions as to what direction the team will go in, and whether players such as Smith have a future in the organization long-term.
“I just want to make it known that those things will never happen from me again.”
As the Raiders continue their season, Smith faces not only the challenge of improving his game but also mending his relationship with fans who have expressed their discontent. The team’s difficult season poses questions about their direction and the future of players like Smith within the organization.
