Looking back, October 2023 will be remembered fondly by fans of the English Football League (EFL). Fresh young talents emerged into the limelight, proving their exceptional skill and indomitable spirit. Pictured above, Joe Gelhardt continues to make waves at Hull City. He just won the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month award for October! His standout performance further underscores Bowen’s abundance of talent and more so underscores Hull’s incredible run this season. On the other hand, Stevenage’s Dan Kemp is another player whose transformation at the hands of manager Gerhard Struber has been a sight to behold. Huddersfield Town’s Leo Castledine, on loan this fall from Chelsea, is taking big steps in his development. It’s what he has accomplished as a young player that’s truly special.
Joe Gelhardt’s game-winning goal that won him the award was just a taste of his developing effectiveness on the pitch. The 21-year-old forward, who enjoyed a breakout season last year with Leeds United, has been on a magical run at Hull City since arriving on loan. His recent success has raised expectations through the roof in advance of his second act. He dreams most of playing at Fratton Park against Portsmouth, a club he has the deepest affection for.
Dan Kemp’s journey has been equally compelling. At 26 years old, he’s had his share of personal demons and still manages to thrive on the pitch. After undergoing heart surgery earlier this year, Kemp returned stronger than ever, showcasing his resilience and dedication to the sport. Working under Gerhard Struber’s mentorship, Kemp has really blossomed this season. His standout display is going a long way to making sure that he’s an ever-present in Stevenage’s XI.
Joe Gelhardt’s Award-Winning Performance
Joe Gelhardt’s winning goal came during a pivotal match that not only secured him individual recognition but reflected Hull City’s overall form this season. The new Hull striker’s goalscoring exploits have made him a player of rapid importance to the team’s attacking disposition.
Gelhardt’s confidence has grown following his run of good form. His enthusiasm came through at keeping his record of exceedance-free compliance. In particular, Brown said that he relished facing Portsmouth at their Fratton Park home. His love for the fans and his team is apparent as he looks to conquer even greater heights.
“I want to play at Fratton Park against Portsmouth,” – Joe Gelhardt
The recognition from the Sky Bet Championship adds to Gelhardt’s growing reputation as one of the league’s rising stars. Beyond just his stats, his shiftiness and ability to change direction has made fans and scouts around the NBA take notice. They’re in search of the next big thing in English football.
Dan Kemp’s Resilience and Growth
Dan Kemp’s career has faced adversity and overcome adversity. At 26, he’s faced even other major hurdles such as heart surgery he had this past spring. This serious health issue could have derailed many athletes, but Kemp used it as motivation to improve his game.
Under the guidance of former New York Red Bulls manager Gerhard Struber, Kemp has turned his fortunes around this season. It is a testament to Struber’s coaching style that Kemp has been able to flourish and his contributions have been key for Stevenage. It’s this mix of Kemp’s tenacity and Struber’s strategic jurisdiction-sheriff savvy that have fueled their successful campaign to date.
Kemp gained useful experience while he was at Leyton Orient and MK Dons. He is now able to use that knowledge to Stevenage. His resilience tells the story of someone determined to do more than just get back on track, surpass and exceed all expectations.
Leo Castledine’s Promising Debut
Leo Castledine is another of the young guns causing a stir in the EFL. Castledine is on loan currently at Huddersfield Town from Premier League parent club Chelsea. Made an impressive senior debut as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough in January 2024. This is a big opportunity this season, and it will be key in his development as a player.
The 19-year-old midfielder is being blooded in competitive, high-pressure matches and that can only speed up his growth into an elite performer. His experience at Huddersfield has certainly allowed him to adjust to all different playing styles. It increases his experience against stiffer competition.
Going from Chelsea’s youth ranks to first-team football at such a prestigious club as the Blues is an exhilarating move for Castledine and exciting opportunity for fans too. Along with great support from Chelsea and chances similar to that at Huddersfield, he’s primed for a promising future in professional football.
