Ja’Quan McMillian has emerged as a crucial player for the Denver Broncos during the absence of star cornerback Pat Surtain II, who is sidelined with a left pectoral injury. Since being promoted from the practice squad before the 2022 season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, McMillian has participated in every game, solidifying his role on the team. This season, he has played 67% of the Broncos’ defensive snaps and has demonstrated his capability by contributing significantly to the team’s defense.
McMillian’s performance has been noteworthy. He also notched seven tackles for loss in 2023, the most ever by a defensive back in Broncos’ history. This accomplishment only serves to further emphasize the impact he’s had on the field, as well as what he can do to opposing offenses. He came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina in 2022. His ascendance to this level of play since then is no accident.
Other than McMillian’s tackles for loss, he’s made a name for himself elsewhere. He’s one of just five players on the Broncos current roster with more than four quarterback takedowns this year. Having finished No. 2 on the team in total tackles a year ago, he’s proven to be a dependable defender. He set franchise record-making history as the third defensive back in franchise history to reach two DFRC. He intercepted two passes in that 2019 season.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton praised McMillian’s work after his team’s upset victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football. During the press conference announcing McMillian’s hiring, Moore praised him for rising to the occasion in a difficult time. His contributions were especially crucial to the team’s defensive schemes.
Vance Joseph, the defensive coordinator, said the same thing. He referred to McMillian as “one of the best nickel corners in the league,” emphasizing his critical role in the secondary, which has undergone several adjustments throughout the season. With Surtain II on ineligibility, the Auburn product has cemented himself at the nickel position, displaying his versatility and smart everywhere on the field.

As the Broncos navigate through injuries and roster changes, McMillian’s contributions have been invaluable. He has flourished within a secondary that has faced constant tweaks and adjustments, adapting quickly to new strategies and responsibilities.
When Surtain II comes back, McMillian and Jahdae Barron will probably split most of the nickel reps. Fans should look for them to be luminous in this space as a duo. Riley Moss has stepped up as a starting outside corner, while Kris Abrams-Draine has taken significant snaps in place of Surtain II. While this rotation definitely points to the depth and versatility in the Broncos’ defense, McMillian’s role continues to remain a key focus.
